Moscow Parks and Gardens

Moscow State University’s Botanic Garden (the "Apothecary Garden")

 

 

It is the oldest Russian botanic garden and the most beautiful and cosiest garden in Moscow!  It was founded 1706, by Russian Tsar Peter the Great,to grow medicinal herbs. The plants grown here were used not only to make medicine, but also to train medical students and future doctors in botany.

 

Like many other medicinal gardens in Europe, by the beginning of the 19th century the Garden had collected hundreds of species of plants. The Garden was purchased by the University in 1805 and still belongs to it today.

 

Over the years, many famous scientists have worked here, making invaluable contributions to the development of Russian natural history. Today this amazing location is not only a place to study biology and nature but also one of the most picturesque areas in Russian capital, where visitors come to relax and admire  collection of exotic plants from all over the world. Here you can find over 50 different species of birds and animals including fishes, amphibians, mammals and many others.

It is interesting to know that cats, which inhabits the Garden today, are direct descendants of tsar cats. The most famous cat is called His Royal Highness and is an official symbol of the Garden with a free access to all territories and nearby restaurants. A special permission was given dy the Garden's Administration.

Apothecary Garden often hosts different festivals, lectures, workshops, concerts, excursions and many other interesting events.

Gorky Park

Gorky Park is a famous Russian national park on the Moskva River. It was even mentioned in famous song of the music rock group Scorpions Wind of Change.

 

If it is not raining we advise you to visit this beautiful area in autumn and enjoy different activities from simple walking to amusement park, skate park, tennis, children playgrounds and many other activities including restaurants with different cuisines and free Wi-Fi. In this location you can also find many beautiful monuments and art objects.

 

Gorky Park is located at 9 Krimsky Val, Moscow

(Nearest Metro Station is Octyabarskaya)

You can enter the Gorky Park through the Main Entrance at Sadovoe Ring or from Leninkiy Prospekt (Neskuchny Garden Entrances)

Kolomenskoye park 

 

Kolomenskoye Park is 350 hectares + ancient emperor estate located on the southeast side of the capital on the way to city Kolomna.  It is traditional area for Muscovites family weekend leisure time. Firstly it was a small village near medieval Moscow during epoch of Ivan Kalita (14th century). Later it became a favorite spot of Russian tsars and their elite. 

Russian Tsar Alexander I

Tsar Alexey I built in Kolomenskoye amazing palace with 250 rooms, later his son Peter the Great also lived there. Another one beautiful palace was built by Catherine the Great in18th century. In 20th century UNESCO included this Kolomenskoy Park in its list of safeguarding world cultural heritage.

Residence Kuskovo 

Residence Kuskovo was the summer country estate of the Sheremetev family - powerful Russian noble family.one of the first summer country estates of the Russian nobility, Today it is a part of Moscow, this location is at the east side of the capital. Kuskovo Ensemble is very popular among citizens as a place for weekend recreation. Besides its territory has beautiful French Park - the only one in Moscow.

This area has many interesting places to see for expats and all guests of our city, such as museum of ceramics, ancient Grotto, different monuments and sculptures, Dutch and Italian Houses of empyreal epoch and many others.

In the center of the estate is situated the Palace - residence of the Sheremetev family with a unique collection of 18th century paintings and amazing interior.
