Where to spend a weekend – Olympic Village Park
Olympic Village Park (Park Olimpiiskoy Derevny) is practically a small valley with a cascade of ponds in the south-west of Moscow. This area belonged to the Olympic Village prepared for the 1980 Olympic Summer Games in Moscow. In 2016 it was reconstructed upon the project of a British architect firm, which was also in charge of building and construction of the Olympic Park in London in 2012, and transformed into a highly modern recreational open space. However, all the decorations and signs resemble the “Moscow 1980” era.
For those living in the south-west of the Russian capital this place is a true blessing as here one can find everything both for a short walk or an outdoor training and for a family weekend. This park is also worth visiting for anyone, seeking for something less overcrowded than popular parks in the city center.
Here are the facilities provided:
-
Sport equipment (bikes, boats, skateboards, roller blades etc.)
-
A lot of space for running and workout (including accessible workout areas, Addidas run base, volleyball and basketball courts, ping-pong tables)
-
6 soft-surface playgrounds for children with various swings and climbing facilities
-
Picnic zone (no barbecue allowed)
-
Small cafes (drinks, sweets, sandwiches)
-
Summer amphitheater and a fountain (tickets for the open-air concerts can be bought per Internet)
-
Festival shopping mall (right nearby; Starbucks, Shokoladnitsa, fast food, Italian restaurant, cinema, supermarket)
Olympic Village Park is everything you usually associate with comfort and peace. It is not about big parties, lights and loud music, but about feeding ducks, walking a dog, biking or watching your children playing around. The park has different levels, with ups and downs making you fitter, if you take evening runs in here. On the bottom of the valley you may feel far away from the city and the views from above are really picturesque.
