Victory Day 9 May
Victory Day is one of the most important Russian holidays and commemorates the victory of the Soviet Union over Nazi Germany in the Great Patriotic War (Second World War). It is celebrated at 9 May on the same day as German signed act of capitulation to the Allies in Berlin, at midnight of 9 May 1945. It is official day off and is widely celebrated all across the country.
It starts with traditional Victory Parade at Red Square, Moscow and with official words of Russian President. First governmental officials, veterans of the war, different Russian personalities and heads of foreign missions attend at this event. Parade consists of different national military troops and military equipment. The annual parade marks the Allied victory in World War II. Traditionally, over 25 Russian major cities also held their parades on this day.
In Moscow some parts of the city center becomes pedestrian and people walk, listen patriotic concerts with military songs, congratulate veterans, give them flowers and smile, take photos with them. In the evening citizens and guests of the city can admire amazing fireworks and special night show program.
