The Intercession of the Theotokos

The Intercession of the Theotokos or the Protection of Our Most Holy Lady Theotokos and Ever-Virgin Mary (also known as Pokrov holiday) is celebrated on 14 october.

 

It is a feast of the Mother of God and protection afforded to the faithful in the Eastern Orthodox and Byzantine Catholic Churches. The Slavic word Pokrov means protection. There are many Orthodox churches in the world with such name.

 

For example the most famous Russian church named for the feast day is Saint Basil's Cathedral (The Cathedral of Vasily the Blessed), located on Red Square, official name of this church is "The Cathedral of the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos on the Moat"
