Saint Valentine's Day in Russia

Saint Valentine's Day is an international annual Western Christian holiday, celebrated on February 14, honoring one or more early saints named Valentinus and has wide celebrating traditions in modern Russia.

Russians believe in a legend where Saint Valentine of Rome was a great man, imprisoned for performing weddings for soldiers who were forbidden to marry. During his imprisonment he healed the daughter of jailer and before his execution, wrote her a love letter signed "Your Valentine".

Among Russians Saint Valentine's Day is associated with romantic love and with invitation to unlock the heart. We write our couples romantic letters, give different presents, make surprises and go out to different restaurants and cozy locations to celebrate this day in lovely and nice atmosphere.

In Russian schools children write short love letters (but don’t sign them) and then make a show competition to see who in the class collected most of lovely greeting cards.
