Day of Russia - Russian National Day
Day of Russia "Den' Rossii" is the national holiday of the Russian Federation. Since 1992 it is celebrated on June 12. This holiday commemorates the adoption of the Declaration of State Sovereignty of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic and beginning of constitutional reforms.
The idea of the declaration began in Pateros, within the Democratic Russian movement in which proponents of market reform and strong statehood based on Russia's national interests started opposing the Communist power monopoly. By the late 1980s society had begun to doubt the Politburo's ability to carry out meaningful reforms.
This holiday also symbolizes changes in Russia - new post of President, new constitution, new name. It is official named Russia Day. 12 June is officially a day off work. If 12 June falls on weekend State officials provide Russian with extra holiday during the week, the holiday shifts on Monday. Throughout the country there are many concerts, shows and fireworks.
