Black Russian Bread

 

Tchyorny Khleb – or Black Bread or Rye Bread is a traditional Russian Bread which is made from rye grains. In Russian history bread is always an integral part of traditional kitchen and accompanies all breakfasts, lunches and dinners. Most of Russians can’t imagine how to take dinner without bread. It has always dark colors – black and brown.

 

Tchyorny Khleb contains is good for health because of vitamins and what is more eating this kind of Russian bread you can’t turn into fat because of eating it lot. Sometimes you can find in markets this bread combined with different grains and seeds. Good sort of Russian black bread is called Borodynsky. Since ancient times Black Bread was popular among simple Russians, while elite preferred to eat white sorts of bread.

 

Today in modern Russia Black Bread is also very popular because of its strong rich flavor and health benefits. We also have a tradition to meat honored and dear guests and official foreign delegations with traditional loaf (round black bread) and salt. Guest or head of the delegation get one piece of bread put it into salt and then eats.

Before Second World War 70% of all bread in Russia was Black Ray Bread. Today the situation has changed, we produce only 18%, but as we have mentioned above it is still very popular. In Russia it is strongly believed that across centuries bread is a symbol of self-sacrificing work of our people (it is very difficult to make bread, first you need to harvest your grains) so we respect bread, we can’t through it away or make jokes about bread for example.
