The Old New Year in Russia
The Old New Year is an informal traditional holiday, celebrated in Russia marking the official beginning of the New Year. This holiday appeared because of the difference between Julian and Georgian Calendars. So as today we live by Georgian Calendar, the difference between two calendars is 14 days. In Georgian calendar New Year falls on 1 January and in Julian - on 14 January.
For many Russians this holiday is a family holiday with hospitality and all festive traditions. We invite friends, relatives, watch concerts and special New Year shows on TV, cook national dishes such as, Salad Olivier, Vinaigrette Salad, roast rabbits, toasts with caviar and more. Moscow capital and other cities also celebrate Old New Year. In parks, squares and other public places there are often interesting cultural and entertainment programs for children and their parents.
For many Russians 14 January Old New Year Holiday also marks ending of the New Year holiday cycle, which starts from 31 December. While Russians start to work officially on 9 January, some people return from holidays and vacations only after 14 January.
After 14 January, most of Russians remove Christmas decorations till next New Year holidays and start new coming year with good mood and positive feelings.
