Easter in Russia
Easter, called Pascha in Russia, is a festival and holiday celebrating the resurrection of Jesus from the dead, described in the New Testament.
While official religion in Russia is Christianity, millions of people celebrate this religious holiday. For many Russians Ester means end of the Great Lent, when they can start to eat meat and dairy products.
During Easter Russians visit each other, give presents, say «Hristos Voskrese!» (Christ is risen) and answer «Voistinu Voskrese!» (Truly He is risen).
As usual, before Easter, Russians go to churches to hallow eggs and cakes.
At Easter Russians paint eggs in different colors, bake or buy special cakes, named Culitchi, give presents to children and each other, organize big family dinners, visit friends and take part at different social holiday activities in their cities.
