What foreigners are affraid in Russia and Moscow
In this article we have decided to find out what main fears have foreigners who want to visit Russia or who are coming to live in our country.
First Worry is about visa regime. Some people think that it is very difficult to obtain Russian visa and especially for countries Russia have sensitive foreign relations with. In fact it is good to know that tourism, business issues, cultural and sport exchange, education and family cases (like marriage with Russians) have no connections with our diplomatic and political affairs. Russia today is always open for everybody who wants to visit us with good intentions. You will never have problems with your visa if you have good intentions and ideas about your stay in our country. What is important – in most cases you should contact only trusted tourist agents or directly Russian consulate to get information about all necessary documents and fill them properly. Besides with some countries we do have visa free regime for 30 and more days so you just need to check basic information at consulate sections.
Second Worry is about our entering Russian on boarders after your plane flights or by train immediately on boarder. If you have no connections with crime, terrorism, have no prohibited and illegal items (all information is available at Russian Customs official website, or you can also ask Consulate employers or your travel agent), if you don’t plan to use Russian territory for illegal migration to other countries - in most of other cases you have no worries.
Third Worry is for Moscow. Many foreigners think that Moscow is very expensive. It is true that Russian capital was in top 5 most expensive cities in the world but for now it is on the 50th place! To get more information how much does it cost to live in Moscow we advise you to read our special article.
Forth worry is connected with Russians character. Some foreign people believe that Russians are rude and unpleasant and don’t like foreigners at all. We are not unpleasant towards foreigners we are suspicious and curious. Because for us, people who speak other languages, are strange and unknown. We have some inner basic principles to help us protect ourselves in public places and in life, but such principles have nothing in common with our hospitality. For instance we don’t like to speak with all strangers and unknown people on streets, we don’t often smile for people we don’t know, sometimes we don’t even say hello to our neighbors. We can start stare and goggle at foreigner only because he doesn’t look like we do. But for example if you ask Russians on the streets to help you with information - most of us will help you without any prejudice. If you make friendship with Russians you understand how generous, open and sincere we are. To maintain good relations with Russia we also recommend you not to discuss with us our government, politics, economic situation, religion, welfare and some other sensitive topics. In all other cases you are always welcome.
Fifth Worry – in Russia is extremely cold. It is partially true. We do have very cold weather and temperatures like -30, -40 degrees Celsius below zero or even more but in most cases such temperature is watched only at winter season from December to March and only in some regions. In most popular tourist cities like Moscow and Saint Petersburg temperature stay at such levels only a few weeks. Average temperature in Russia at winter season in most of tourist destinations is -5 to -15 degrees Celsius. In Summer 20 to 35 degrees Celsius what is rather comfortable.
Sixth Worry is language difficulties. This is true in Russia most popular languages after Russian is English. In big cities you can find native citizens speaking French, German, Spanish, Italian, Arabic, Chinese and other languages, but not a lot. Official international language in Russia is English. If you don’t know English or Russian but want to visit our country we advise you to find a friend or interpreter with your native language (by Internet) or just travel in Russia with a group of other tourists trusting your tour operator to provide your agenda and all necessary comfort.
Seventh Worry Russia is dangerous, you can face with crime, somebody may rob you steal your documents etc. Russia is dangerous as all other countries in the world are dangerous for tourists. If you follow basic rules like
-carry in safe place your documents
- avoid going out at night alone
- escape unknown neighborhoods located too far from the center and popular attractions
- don’t show your money to everybody
- use only official taxi
and all other rules foreigners and tourists stick to in other countries you have no need to worry about.
