Airborne Forces Day in Russia

 

2 August is in Russia airborne forces day.  Russian airborne forces are military units, called VDV (Voenno Vozdushnie Voiska). These are elite Russian troops which are usually transported by air and can be easily deployed almost anywhere. These rapid response forces specialize in short combat operations and important security missions including fight against terrorism.

Soviet Union airborne forces were the largest in the world, consisted of 7 divisions and participated in all Soviet and Russian conflicts since the Second World War, including the Afghanistan war. Russian airborne forces have two distinctive symbols «telnyashka» (military t-shirt with blue and white stripes and blue beret. 

 

This day it is strongly recommended expats and foreigners to be careful because of mass spontaneous demonstrations of Russian militaries celebrating their holiday!
